U-Haul ranks College Station No. 6 among U.S. growth cities
College Station is the No. 6 U.S. Growth City of 2024, according to the U-Haul Growth Index analyzing one-way customer moves over the past year. College Station earned the same growth ranking for 2023.
Of all the U-Haul traffic to come and go from College Station last year, 52.4% was incoming and 47.6% outgoing. Looking at year-over-year variations, arrivals were down 5% in 2024 (compared to 2023), while departures were down 1% as overall moving traffic slowed.
In addition to its annual list of the top 25 growth cities, U-Haul recognized its top 25 growth metropolitan areas for the first time. The top growth cities (city propers) are from markets outside the leading metros, allowing more communities to be recognized for their ability to attract and retain do-it-yourself movers.

“The University of Texas A&M has seen a significant jump in student population over the last few years,” stated James Zipperer, U-Haul Company of Northwest Houston president. “The university is also a major driver of employment and brings a lot of people to town.
“The cost of living in College Station is still pretty reasonable compared to other parts of Texas. Another thing people find attractive about it is its big-city vibe with small-country living. You get all of the benefits of the city in the metropolitan area, but you’ve got the luxuries of it still being a rural farm area. People have found out that it’s a good place to start and raise a family.”
The
U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from well over 2.5 million one-way truck, trailer, and U-Box® portable moving container transactions annually in the U.S. and Canada.
