The city’s economic development team is seeking new and innovative projects to benefit our community. Below you’ll see a few initiatives already under way in College Station.
One Health Plus Biocorridor
In 2011 the cities of Bryan and College Station adopted an inter-local agreement to jointly assist in the development of The Research Valley Biocorridor to serve as the epicenter of Texas’ emerging biotech industry. Located just west of Bryan-College Station, Texas, the 3,500-acre biocorridor is an international destination for education, research, development, commercialization and production of innovative technologies to improve global health.
The development will build on existing resources that already call the biocorridor home, including the Texas A&M Health Science Center, National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing, Caliber Biotherapeutics, G-Con, Woodbolt International, and the future home of the Texas A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing (CIADM). In June 2012, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded Texas A&M System a contract to development CIADM. The $285.6 million public-private partnership is intended to enhance the nation’s bio-security preparedness and create significant opportunity for associated job growth.
College Station Medical District
College Station is poised to capitalize on one of the most significant economic development opportunities in its history—the creation of a medical district that will become a regional destination as well as an economic catalyst for the City. This effort is supported by that fact that, nationally, healthcare is among the most promising industries for job growth and real estate development in the coming decades. Demand for healthcare services, jobs and development is driven by a number of factors, particularly the tremendous growth of Americans over the age of 65 who require the most medical services.
Recognizing these healthcare industry trends and their potential for significant economic impact to College Station, City Council established a goal of creating a special district focusing on medical care, and a health and wellness lifestyle. In 2012 the City Council adopted the College Station Medical District Master Plan for a high quality, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly district that will complement and enhance the emerging concentration of medical and health care uses in the vicinity of State Highway 6 (SH 6) and Rock Prairie Road. With a vision of community-wide health and wellness, the master plan integrates health-consciousness and lifestyle into all aspects of development. It focuses on creating a distinct “place” rather than a random collection of businesses and neighborhoods by providing a mixed-use collaboration of medical, commercial and residential uses; an emphasis on walkability; an extensive greenway and trail system; and high-quality, sustainable site development.
Business Center at CS-Spring Creek
College Station is always looking to further diversify the local economy, offering quality employment opportunities not directly tied to Texas A&M University, while still capitalizing on its world-class offerings. The community is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the workforce attracted to the area because of the higher education offerings, as well as the abundance of graduates each year.
Opened in 1996, the Business Center at College Station is a 200-acre, Class “A” business park less than 10 miles from Texas A&M University, making it an ideal location for businesses seeking to expand their opportunities. It includes fully developed infrastructure, beautiful landscaping, and zoning for further technology and office development. Current tenants include the Texas A&M University System, StataCorp, Cognizant, Heat Transfer Research, Reynolds & Reynolds, Rentsys Recovery Services, and Suddenlink Media.
The Spring Creek Corporate Campus will serve as the second phase of the Business Center at College Station.
Sports, Entertainment & Hospitality
College Station has a long, proud sports tradition closely linked with the University, most recently broadened with A&M’s entry into the Southeastern Conference. Collegiate sports, and increasingly amateur sports, bring thousands of visitors to our community annually, adding millions of dollars to our local economy. These visitors stay in hotel rooms, dine in restaurants, and shop in stores. In addition to sports, other events such as conferences and cultural offerings add vitality to our local quality of life. Areas such as the Northgate Entertainment District and Wolf Pen Creek have long attracted local residents and visitors to celebrate the unique character of College Station and to participate in the many events hosted in our community.
General Commercial & Retail Development
College Station is in an envious position – the presence of more than 50,000 students provides an affordable labor force for retail businesses and also brings outside money into the local economy. This population represents a large young population with significant discretionary dollars to spend has helped bring retailers and restaurants to the College Station not otherwise supported by the local market, thereby keeping more retail expenditures in the community. The City of College aims to continue to recognize the significance of retail expenditures to the local economy, will ensure that locations are ready to accommodate the development of such opportunities, and that the City remains responsive to an ever changing market.
